Why do the two knife handle materials look so much different?
The cotton denim cloth that I use is woven from blue and white threads. It is bluer on one side with more white showing on the other side. It is available in plain weave or in twill.
( TWILL: To weave cloth so as to produce the appearance of diagonal lines or ribs on the surface.)
The pieces that are made with the Twill denim can be laid up with the diagonal lines parallel to each other (Parallel) or running at a 90 degree angle.(Bias Ply). Contouring a knife handle exposes more of the recessive color (depending on which side you are grinding). The exposed pattern will vary depending on whether it is Plain Weave, Parallel Ply, or Bias Ply.
